Why Scandinavians move to Spain – and stay

May 24, 2022 Lifestyle What's happening?

Those of you who visit the Costa del Sol regularly will have noticed the rising prevalence of Scandinavians in the region, as manifested in the influence of the Danish and Swedish design schools, new Scandinavian businesses and eateries, and of course a growing number of Norwegians, Swedes and Danes buying holiday homes and relocating to the area on a permanent or semi-permanent basis.

They have added a very modern and yet also natural form of style and sophistication to the coast, and from new schools to design shops and Scandi boutiques, the Nordic wave has been noticeable in Southern Spain and indeed other parts of the country in recent years. They are certainly not new to these shores, having originally ‘discovered’ them in the sixties, but now this area is more in favour than ever.

A draw for all generations

There was a time when Scandinavian visitors came mostly for the sunny beaches and for Swedish and Danish property buyers in Spain to enjoy the long golfing season, but as it grows the market is diversifying and in addition to being a very popular retirement destination, the very quality, climate and security that the Costa del Sol offers is also making it popular with people in other age groups.

Nordic people love the climate, scenery, golf courses and easy-going Spanish culture, but they also like the high standard of amenities, leisure opportunities and services in this region, and this includes a safe place in which to enjoy a preferred lifestyle and family life that includes good healthcare, a sociable cosmopolitan environment and lots of sports activities and outdoor living.

More and more professionals and entrepreneurs with young families are also moving to the Costa del Sol, enjoying all the above while being able to work remotely and make the most of the many international connections that take you from Málaga airport to major European and global destinations with ease.

And as anyone who has lived here knows, once you settle on the Costa del Sol it’s hard to enjoy anywhere else!
