Benalmádena Pueblo – true Andalusian charm in the heart of the Costa del SolMay 18, 2018 Lifestyle
Those living on or visiting the Costa del Sol are all familiar with Benalmádena – one of the coastal towns that makes up this internationally renowned destination – but relatively few people know that this lively seaside town with its famous marina and attractive residential areas is also home to a hidden treasure.
That treasure is Benalmádena Pueblo, a delightfully charming small Andalusian town set against the slopes overlooking a broad coastal expanse. The latter also includes the larger new town of Benalmádena, which flows downhill from the original pueblo to the Mediterranean Sea. From its hillside position, Benalmádena Pueblo not only enjoys panoramic mountain and sea views, but also resembles a classic Andalusian mountain village – complete with the unique charm of white-washed houses, cobbled streets and quaint little squares where traditional fountains are overlooked by family-run restaurants, tapas bars and cafés.
Together, they produce a rustic appeal that evokes the intimate Andalusian village atmosphere in the heart of the Costa del Sol. Indeed, seated at a local eatery enjoying traditional fare or watching the world go by with a café con leche and churros (a classic fried dough pastry dipped in sugar or hot chocolate), it is hard to imagine you’re close to Fuengirola, Málaga and Marbella, and not in the midst of a rustic scene of the Serranía de Ronda mountain range.
The village has a soul and ambience of its own that is complimentary to Benalmádena. Situated 200 metres above sea level, the air is fresh, the springtime almond blossom beautiful and the tightly packed homes alluring. Founded even before Moorish and Roman times, the pueblo has been inhabited since time immemorial and continues to offer visitors to and residents of the Costa del Sol a touch of authentic Andalusian flavour right on their very doorsteps.
Our suggestion: visit Benalmádena Pueblo for an enjoyable stroll around the pretty centre before rewarding yourself with a delicious local meal.
