Málaga under consideration to become European Capital of Culture 2024

Feb 20, 2023 What's happening?

After Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao, Málaga could become the fourth Spanish city to be chosen as European Culture Capital – and it’s thanks to the amazing architecture, history, gastronomy and of course cultural offer of the city.

Málaga is a centre of Mediterranean culture, a city originally founded by the Phoenicians whose long history traces a distant line from those seafaring traders to the Romans, Moors and Conquistadores to the present day. We know Málaga to be on a par with other gems such as Barcelona when it comes to sites, food, museums and overall vibe and atmosphere—and now the rest of Europe knows it too!

The city is already a cultural destination on an international level, with cruise ships lining the quays in the port and many flying in directly to visit the capital of the Costa del Sol region and second largest city in all of Andalucía. Indeed, Málaga has beaten other cultural gems such as Sevilla – Andalucía’s capital and largest city – to the nomination, which if successful would focus even more attention on the delights of the port city in the sun.

Málaga has been a rising star for some time, but it continues to soar up the rankings, also because the city continues to work hard at improving its urban infrastructure, cultural patrimony and leisure offering. Among the most outstanding of these are the Picasso Museum, Museum of Fine Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Teatro Cervantes, Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Teatro del Soho Caixabank, among others.

Together with the beautiful historic buildings, parks, shopping streets, restaurants, cafés and castles that adorn this city of art, it confirms Málaga as one of the leading city destinations not just in Spain but in all of Europe.
